Postcards :)

Below are two of the postcards we plan to use. We have decided to use a stencil like font as it's very impersonal. The alcoholic one has ripped paper and looks more 'thrown together' than the cheat one to show the emotion behind this postcard.

Postcard Creation - Cheat

One of the postcards we need is the one that states that 'Carley' is a cheat, although we don't know who she is cheating on it is obvious that it shouldn't be happening.

Here are some examples of 'postsecrets' on the subjects of cheating, infidelity and unhappy relationships:

Alot of the text on these 'postsecrets' are written in very impersonal fonts. So we have decided fonts like this would work best in our postsecret. We have found various different pictures associated with love and have found several different fonts to experiment with. We have also put these in both black and red to see which one will work best. Out of all of the pictures below I believe that the picture of Romeo&Juliet would work bets on a postsecret about cheating as they are one of the most well known couple sin history. The fact that they were so in love would be a perfect contradiction for a postsecret showing a unfaithful partner. We were planning on making this postsecret very blunt and putting just the word "cheat" on it. We did this as we believe the image is enough to show the audience 'Carley's' feelings on this, especially with the previous and following visual shots.

Below are the images of the texts used for the postcard, there are also some of the images we considered using on the postcard:

The font that was most similar to typewriter letters was the text that we used in the end. This one was the most impersonal which is why this one would of worked the most. We used a mixture of both black and red letters so it didn't look too boring. It was important that the postcard caught the audiences eye as this is a key point of the film.

Carley

Carley is the main character in our film. She is a teenager who lives with her mother. Her mother has recently broken up with Carley's father and has started drinking heavily.

Carley's appearance consists of quite scruffy clothes and messy hair. She isn't very traditional in the sense that she doesn't take much in pride in her appearance. She has several problems including problems at school, problems with her peers and with her mother. She has also started to take drugs to 'escape' her everyday life. She's very quiet and keeps herself very much to herself. The fact that she tries to attend school and carry on normally, when she is having such big problems at home, we thought made her seem like she was still trying to progress with her life. This makes the character more relateable and it makes the audience want her to get away from her problems.

Review Examples

As part of the project we have to complete two ancillary tasks. We chose to do the film poster and a movie review as opposed to a radio advert. We thought that these pieces would be more effective and we would be able to create them to a better quality than if we attempted to do a radio advert. Ruby is more experienced on the editing software Photoshop so we thought it would be better if she produced the poster and I have chosen to do the review. In order to have a good idea of the style of reviews I have decided to research into film reviews.

FilmEmpire: FilmEmpire is a very well known for film reviews. They tend to have one review per page and also have similar films in the side. They use the star system to rate how good it is. They give a written review which is written in mixed mode, often posing questions to the reader. It is set out in a very organized way with clear section for each different bit of writing e.g. review, plot, verdict.

The above review was taken from the magazine 'Hip Hop Connection.' When the film 'Kidulthood' was released they wrote a review on it. I really liked the layout of this review as it gave you more information about different factors of the film (music, shots, mis-en-scene, etc) and not just the plot. The overall layout looks really good as well so I've decided to try and recreate this for my review. As our film is a social realism film, like Kidulthood, I thought this sort of layout would fit very well in with our film. I can also use some different still shots within my review to increase the graphological appeal.

Below is the introductary text for my review:

"With some many ways to consume media these days – video games, digital radio, HD television- film has had quite a hard time trying to stay as dominant as it has previously been. Because of this a lot of films, especially short films, have drifted past basically unnoticed. But Final Notice is one of those short films, that is worth noticing as it stands out among all the action-packed blockbusters in the cinema, simply because of the portrayal of it’s main character is so realistic. The main characters plight is shown so well, it gives you the feeling that you are actually there with her following every problem she goes through. Final Notice is the first film made by super-group Filmsecret. Filmsecret, consisting of three female members, is one of the newest independent film companies to appear over the past year. Final Notice follows the day-in-the-life-of format which is very familiar to independent films, as seen in other films such as London to Brighton, Kidulthood and Donkeypunch."

By making references to other independant films (those in blue) we are able to refer and maybe draw comparisons. Therefore, if people liked particular parts of these films, they are more likely to want to watch our film.

Mis-en-sceneeee

For the first filming date (13/11) we plan to complete the scene with 'Carley' buying alcohol form bargain booze and also some of the outside shots. These will probly be shot on Forest Rd in Kingswood.

The shots that will be filmed will be mostly the general shots, of walking etc. As the main character is quite scruffy, she should be dressed appropriately, in tracksuit bottoms, messy hair, cheap shoes such as daps. So these clothes will be needed, we also need to purchase alcohol to show her walking out with.

Other Stuff..

As part of the entire project we need to make the actual film, a movie poster and a written movie review. Below are some examples of movie posters:

All of the above are examples of independent movie posters. I thought that finding the conventions of these movie posters would be more suitable as our film is going to be shot like an independent film. All of the above posters aren't very intricate with the exception of the Donkeypunch which shows two of the main environments from the movie. London to Brighton's movie poster includes 3 separate stills from the movie. This is done in a very effective way as the viewer of this media text is intrigued as to how these moments in the film have come about for example the shot of the girl looking scared would make the audience want to know what the situation at that time.
I personally think that a poster in a similar style to the London to Brighton poster would suit our short film very well. This would allow the audience to see a progression between the protagonist's starting place and the place the film leaves her. It will also give us a chance to show various aspects of her life easily and without too much explanation. Also in a similar way to the London to Brighton poster it may draw the audience in more as they will want to find these moments in the film themselves.
